Study Tips with Pukka Pads.

The Cornell note-taking method explained...

For over 20 years we’ve been designing and making notebooks, and think we’ve got that down to a T. However, over the years we've noticed many different ways that students of all ages take notes. At Pukka Pads we're here to help you find the best method for you! It’s helpful to try out different methods and see which one works best for you.

Today on the blog we’re taking a look at the Cornell note-taking system. Did you know that this note-taking system was invented by Professor Walter Pauk of Cornell University in the 1950’s?! It's great to know that the system has stood the test of time and is still so popular among students today.

What makes Cornell note-taking effective?

  • Great for all kinds of subjects: The Cornell method can be used for all kinds of subjects including English, History, Science & more.
  • Easy to summarise: Summarising a subject helps you understand the topic more clearly and helps you niche down key information. You can test yourself to summarise your notes from the knowledge you've learnt.
  • Precise note-taking. The Cornell note-taking method allows for a more precise method of taking notes. There's no need to write everything down!
  • Revision-ready notes. When it comes time to revisit your notes these will be more precise and helpful for your studies.

How to do Cornell note-taking.

The Cornell note-taking system involves structuring your notes into different sections to help you organise your notes clearly.

The sections include:

  1. Title/date.
  2. A long column on the left for keywords/ comments.
  3. A larger column on the right for the main body of notes.
  4. A small section at the bottom to summarise your notes.

Adaptation

Of course, like any method you can adapt the Cornell system to suit you, you might not need the keyword section or the summary section could be used for something else.
