Can you recycle Christmas wrapping paper?

No matter how old we get, the joy of unwrapping presents is one of the best feelings. However, as the world is becoming more eco-conscious it’s important to know how we can reduce our effect on the environment. Today, we’re talking to you about all things wrapping paper - how you can recycle it and planet-friendly alternatives! Did you know that on average 227,000 miles of wrapping paper is thrown away during Christmas time, (not recycled) let's put that into perspective, that’s nearly the distance to the moon! When in-fact, most wrapping paper can be recycled! Here’s what you need to know to make sure you recycle responsibly this Christmas.

We've put together some tips on how you can recycle better this Christmas.

1. Check if it can be recycled.

Most wrapping paper that has been laminated, dyed or has glitter can’t be recycled! Instead of chancing it, whilst out Christmas shopping look for the recycled logo, this means you can recycle it instead of simply chucking it away.

2. Keep it clean.

Make sure you’ve taken off any tape, ribbons, labels and bows if these can’t be recycled. A lot of wrapping paper actually ends up in landfill rather than being recycled because there is still tape left on it. Make sure you keep hold of the ribbons and bows, these could be re-used next year.

3. Choose Kraft paper instead.

Kraft paper is a great alternative to wrapping paper, it’s strong and reliable and can be recycled kerbside after use. If you’re wondering how you can make kraft paper look festive, check out our blog post of simple ways you can spruce it up! You can shop our range of kraft paper here.

4. Use a gift box.

Instead of wrapping gifts in wrapping paper that will be chucked out, choose to use an alternative and place your presents in gift boxes this year. These can be reused for years to come and look beautiful too!

5. Use gift baskets.

Everyone loves a gift basket– display your gorgeous gifts in a fabulous gift basket instead. Local charity shops usually have lots of baskets in all shapes and sizes for sale and are handy for packaging Christmas presents.

6. Upcycle last year's Christmas paper!

This Christmas keep in mind that you can reuse lots of wrapping paper and accessories. Bottle bags, un-damaged wrapping paper, bows and tags are great things to keep for next year! You can even upcycle them and give them a new life. So, keep your eyes peeled and make sure you're rummaging through your pile of wrapping paper.
