World Book Day 2024!

Today, on World Book Day we delve into why this day is important, the benefits reading and writing have on children and how stationery can be a catalyst for nurturing these essential skills!

World Book Day this year is celebrated on Thursday 7th March 2024, the annual event highlights the impact that reading and writing have on our lives no matter our age. In recent times our everyday lives have been inundated with digital distractions but, World Book Day aims to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

World Book Day was created by UNESCO in 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. World Book Day is now celebrated in over 100 countries to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading. You can find more about World Book Day on their official website here.

The benefits reading and writing has on children.

There are many benefits writing and writing has on children, World Book Day aims to highlight these benefits and ensure that every child has the opportunity to read. Children who read and write regularly not only improve their academic skills but also improve their language skills, and develop imagination and feelings towards different life experiences.

Benefits of reading and writing:

Language development and vocabulary expansion: As children immerse themselves in the world of reading, they discover new words and subconsciously absorb an abundance of words that they may not use or hear in everyday life, allowing them to expand their knowledge. Parents or teachers could even promote the use of our vocab book to write down the new words they learn to keep track of their progress.

Development of imagination and creativity: Stories can open up a whole new world to children, stimulating their imaginations and nurturing their creativity. When reading stories that construct new places, characters and relationships that go beyond the real world, children are promoted to think innovatively and picture the appearance of characters and places in their minds, building on their creativity and imagination skills.

Emotional development: Many stories aim to help children cope with new life experiences, helping children with what to expect and how to respond in certain scenarios. This could be a new brother or sister arriving, grief, starting school or different home situations. Reading these types of stories can teach children about the world around them and help them to understand how they would feel in those situations and develop empathy, an important part of a child’s development.

How can stationery fuel reading and writing?

At Pukka Pads we believe that stationery is a gateway to creativity and expression. Our super handy range of notebooks, stationery and project books are designed to inspire budding writers and readers to put pen to paper to express their thoughts and feelings, and even create the next best-seller.

How stationery can enhance reading and writing?

Journalling: Journalling can encourage children to document their reading journey, by using our notebooks they can jot down their favourite quotes, summarise plots, reflect on character developments and even write reviews on the latest books they’ve read. Putting pen to paper is a great way to enhance their reading experience and expand their knowledge.

Annotating:  Encouraging children to annotate their books as they read using sticky notes and tabs can help promote critical thinking skills and allow children to delve deeper into the text making meaningful connections to characters and linking plot developments together. The use of sticky notes and tabs can also encourage children to go back to a book at a later time and expand on each point.

Writing prompts: Parents and teachers can spark inspiration by using our record cards to encourage children to get creative, unleash their imagination and embark on literary adventures. Start by writing a prompt on one side of the record card and let their imaginations flow by allowing them to write a poem, short story or even a whole book using the prompt you’ve given them.

Here’s a list of wiring prompts you could use:

Write a short story and what it might be like if you woke up one morning with a _______.
Write a poem about the season you are in, explaining why you love it.
Write about what it would be like if you had a _______ as a pet.
Write a story using these 5 words as a starting point: apple, train, red, giraffe and paper.
Who is your favourite person on earth and what do you like about them?
If you had a superpower what one would you like?

Help us celebrate World Book Day by helping to build love for reading and writing for the next generation though the use of stories and stationery! So let us ignite imaginations, empower children and turn the page to a brighter future filled with stories and stationery!

Happy World Book Day from the Pukka Pads team.
