The Irlen range has been super popular for over 15 years with people who suffer from visual perception difficulties. Our Irlen range has been designed with guidance from the Irlen Institute to help children through to adults who suffer from Irlen Syndrome with finding resources to help them.
But, what is Irlen Syndrome?
There is a common misconception that people see things in the same way, but this is simply not the case. Irlen Syndrome is a problem with the brain’s ability to process visual information and can be shown in a variety of different ways. When it comes to reading and writing, someone with Irlen Syndrome may experience writing changes on the page. The page may appear blurry, letters may float, words may double or be outlined, or could even shake/swirl on the page. This makes simple tasks at school, work or home very difficult to complete.
Did you know that 14% of the general population and 46% of people with reading or learning difficulties suffer from Irlen Syndrome?
Symptoms of Irlen Syndrome.
Individuals with Irlen Syndrome may experience a range of symptoms, including but not limited to:
- Difficulty reading, words may appear to move, blue, or change shape on the page.
- Eye strain, headaches and discomfort during or after reading.
- Light sensitivity and discomfort in brightly lit environments.
- Poor concentration and attention difficulties.
- Reduced reading comprehension and slow reading speed.
- Avoidance reading and writing due to the discomfort they cause.
How does the Irlen range by Pukka Pads help?
Coloured paper reduces the amount of contrast on the page, making it less stressful for the brain to look at.
Ways our Irlen pads can help:
- Reduced visual distortion: Using a coloured notebook can minimise the visual distortions experienced by individuals with Irlen Syndrome. The coloured paper acts as a filter, reducing the intensity of certain light wavelengths and making it easier for the brain to process information.
- Increased comfort and concentration: With reduced visual distortions, individuals can experience less eye strain and discomfort while reading or writing. This, in turn, helps improve concentration and allows for longer periods of sustained focus.
- Enhanced reading comprehension: Coloured pads can contribute to better reading comprehension. When visual distractions are minimised, individuals can better understand and retain information.
